    Coldplay: Fix you

More subtleties from the Cold boys

Of course, criticising Coldplay in this day and age is like trying to stop a runaway juggernaut with a damp sponge, but only a churl would deny that they do this kind of thing to the very highest standard. On its own terms, ‘Fix You’ is lovely, with its ecclesiastical organ and Martin’s pained vocals articulating with great exactness the ceaseless turmoil of a man who is schtupping a thin, mad actress. More subtle and hymnal than their usual quiet-LOUD dynamic trick, and really rather charming.

      Coldplay : Clocks
The windswept stand-out from Coldplay’s very pleasant ‘A Rush Of Blood...’ LP, ‘Clocks’ is basically just an uncluttered canvas for celebrity saint Chris Martin’s angelic voice and gently descending ivory tinklings. Its chilly minimalism is what makes it so charming, now gurning rock maximalism has become tediously ubiquitous. But this does beg the question: Coldplayblokes, don’t you care? Bash out a couple of crazy solos and maybe you could bag an actress too.
